A matter of trust December 5, 2006
Posted by spacemom in : Kids , 2 commentsSunday was a watershed day. One of those days that I hope to remember forever.
It was evening and Soleil was having an apple snack before bed. I had my legs stretched out and she was resting on them. She looked up at me.
S: "Mom? I broke a rule today"
Me:"hmm, which one? The don’t go on a castle roof one?"
S: "No, I went up on the top bunk while the fan was on"
Me:"Oh, what happened?"
S: "The fan hit my fingers and they got all red. I asked Daddy to turn off the fan"
Me: "Did Daddy get mad at you?"
S: "No, he got me some ice. I’m sorry I broke a rule."
Me: "It’s okay. The reason we have that rule is so you don’t hurt yourself. You broke the rule and guess what? You hurt yourself. Next time, turn off the fan first, okay?"
S: "Okay. Are you mad, mommy?"
Me: "No, I just want you to be safe."
S:"Okay"
The subject then changed. But inside, I was thrilled. Soleil and I just had a discussion about breaking a rule and the consequences. I didn’t yell or freak out on her. I let her explain how things went. Sure, this is a small thing, but this is how you lay out trust. I want both of the girls to feel comfortable with coming to us with a big problem. I don’t want them to be afraid of us yelling or losing it.
And so begins the start of trust.
I Flu! December 1, 2006
Posted by spacemom in : Weblogs, Life...otherwise , 3 commentsI just got into my office. Yes, at 11:30am. And I woke up before Maya and Miguel came on!(BTW I hate that show, but the girls LOVE it)
I spent the morning at Soleil’s daycare. Her pre-Kindergarten class is doing a space week, so I was asked to give a talk since Jay and I work with space stuff. Fun, but man, a class of 4 year olds is enough to drive me nuts! I don’t know how the teachers do it.
Then into work where there is a flu clinic today. Jay has not yet been cleared to get a flu shot. The steroids would normally mean he should take the flu shot, BUT the other drug he is on has warnings like "if you are exposed to chicken pox while on this drug, Get your immune-suppressed ass to a hospital before you keel over". He asked his doc, but she hasn’t responded. So, I took the shot this year. Last year, no body got the shot and Luna, Soleil and I got the flu all at the same time. That was fun! NOT! So I bit the bullet and did the shot. Probably shouldn’t since I have a cold, but hey, live dangerously. Unfortunately, this was my first time, so they made me wait 20 minutes to see if I had any reactions. Lovely. I didn’t bring my book club book in because I knew I would blow off work and read the book instead. Damn, I wish I had brought it.
You know, it’s hard to get work done when your boss is out of town and you finished your weekly task list on Thursday. But here I am.
I have two more "long posts" I am thinking about. Maybe I’ll get to writing them today.
In other news, Sparky and Kikalee and C (password) need some love. They all missed the referral cutoff this month for their daughters in China. We know it is only one more month to wait, but they could use the love.
