Ok my crafty friends, I need help. Two of the girls’ dresses have lost the hem. I need to sew them back up. I would like to purchase a small sewing machine to help me. You know, maybe work on small patterns, etc in the future?
BUT I don’t want to buy the cheapest out there, nor do I want to buy the most expensive.
I saw the Singer Featherweight II 118(under compact). Here’s an ebay link because the Singer site is very Java happy and I can’t get a good link.
What do you think? What would you suggest for a person who wants to do simple mending and maybe some simple projects?
I trust the Singer name, I know that is the brand my mom used… Any suggestions?

Yeah, I can’t really help you either – I have used sewed a little bit before, but using my Mom’s super duper machine.
Hey SpaceMom – a bunch of us who have just taken up sewing all ended up with the same machine – the BrotherES200 (I think that’s it). It’s about $150 from Amaazon. I just have to learn how to use it. But other than that, well, I think it’s great.
Oh, and while you’re thinking of sewing hems, just go ahead and get Amy Butler’s book In Stitches. It’s really fun.
Okay, I got a New Home machine this weekend. Retails for $279, got it on sale at Hancocks for $130!! So far, I love it. Other good brands are Jenome, Brother (though tends to be more expensive), and White (this ranked last). If you go into any fabric store they should be able to help you out and point you to the best machine for your needs.
