Sewing help? May 3, 2007

Posted by spacemom in : Ghost in the (sewing)Machine , trackback

A friend has been looking for a pair of PJ’s for his wife in a special fabric. Instead of finding the PJ’s, I found a similar fabric on ebay and snatched 3 yards of it. Now I am planning to make a pair of PJ pants with it.

Here’s the catch. I am 5′3", 135lbs. His wife is definitely taller and a little heavier than I am.

How can I get him to get her measurements without tipping off what’s going on? This is a surprise for her.
If he could measure a pair of PJ’s that she likes and fits well, what measurements should he do?

Help????
Thanks

I am planning on doing the pattern twice, once for me so I learn the pattern and how to work with knits and then for her on the special fabric I bought.

Anyone with measurement tips on how to measure someone who I can’t actually measure?

Don’t you compromise. Make that wife lose weight!

Let’s see:

You need the rise–measured from waistband through the crotch back up to the waistband.

You need the waist measurement (I’m assuming you’re going to use elastic).

You need the hip measurement, down around the crotch area.

You need the thigh measurement midway between the crotch and the knee.

And you need the inseam length.

That should do it, right?

Um–that’s all measuring the existing pajama bottoms! What would be best, of course, is if there were a pair of PJ bottoms that were wearing out; a sneaky hubby could suggest to her that they toss them (see that hole growing there?), and then just mail them to you, you could take the seams apart, and do a pattern from that.

I would go to the Gap, buy a pair of pj bottoms in her size, copy the dimensions and return them. Not that I would ever take my own advice or anything….

I would try what Omega suggested: get hubby to “disappear” a pair of her fave pajama bottoms. If she is like most of us, she’ll assume it’s somewhere in the Please Wash Me pile, or perhaps in the What, I Have to Put Them Away, Too? pile and it will be a couple of weeks before she realizes she’s done an entire wash cycle and not seen them. By then you’ll have taken all the measurements and returned them.
