Trackback Hell

UGH! I am getting so frustrated! I am getting bots that come through my blog and put up trackbacks on old posts. These are for P*rN or for drug or damn Viagr@ UGH! I had 22 trackbacks today!

It is hard for me to go back and remove all of the trackbacks from my old posts….sigh….

Anyone else have trouble with this? Suggestions?

  1. I get those bastards all the time. WordPress’ spam detector has been terrible of late. One way to deal with it is to change your comment settings to put all comments by first time users in your moderation queue. That seems to trap all the bots in one place. It is quite the pain in the arse.

  2. Akismet is the spam filter for all WordPress blogs. You should already have it. It has caught over 50,000 spam comments on my site, but the occasional Trackback spammer sneaks through.

  3. Akismet has worked fabulously for me too-caught all the trackbacks. For some reason mine go to singles sites rather than drugs-or is it the same…

But I do moderate first time comments as well-haven’t caught anything there though. ~lmc

  4. Akismet is great but there appears to be a class of trackback spam (and well done comment spam) that it doesn’t catch. Since I had an extreme case of this “old posts are being hit” problem that you describe I installed the aptly named “Comment Timeout” plugin (which allows you to set heuristics how long comments are allowed based on time since it was posted, time since last approved comment and some more criteria). Has worked very well for me.
