Pop goes the cider! November 16, 2007
Posted by spacemom in : Food and Drink , 3 commentsSoleil came into Luna’s room this morning while I was getting tights on Luna…
S:"Mommy(whinny voice) I stepped in something YUCKY!"
Me: "Where?"
S:"On my foot!"
Me: (in my head- Duh, of course it’s on your foot, you stepped in it!) "Which room did you step in it?" (see I can grammerize it!)
S:"The kitchen doorway!"
I dry off her foot and then follow. Under the fridge door, two pools of a yellowish orange liquid are oozing out
Toss down towels, worry that the fridge has died again.
Nope! Turns out we bought cider 2 weeks before Halloween and FORGOT ABOUT IT!
The wee beasties have been having a ball in there and the gas pressure burst the bottle!
Oops!
Then I had to explain fermentation to the kids….
I may actually have a double header post today! I am getting a hair cut (normal on a day at home) BUT also some highlights! Never did that before! I might do a before and after picture….
Ouch! Damn Bullets November 15, 2007

“Please God, Send rain” November 14, 2007
Posted by spacemom in : Current Affairs , 1 comment so farWe have a book that a baby sitter got us called "You Never Know:The legend of the Lamed Vavniks"
This story is about how a town is plagued with a drought and pray for rain. It is only when the poor shoemaker, Schmuel, prays with the simple prayer "Please God, Send Rain" that rain falls. To read more about the Lamed Vavniks, click here.
The point is, this is a fairy tale. A cautionary reminder that we need to treat EVERYBODY with respect, not just those that we think are smart and wise. As a mother of Jewish children, I find this totally a total appropriate way to bring this message forward to my children.
What is INappropriate is what the Governor of Georgia did yesterday. Governor Perdue held a PRAYER SESSION on the steps of the CAPITAL BUILDING to pray for rain. Dude, WHAT THE F*CK ARE YOU THINKING?
Instead of praying for rain, why didn’t you consider the environmental hazards of unprecedented growth in your state? Why have you not called upon for stricture conservation laws? Why haven’t you worked on desalination projects?
Instead, The governor decides to violate the separation of Church and State and hold a prayer session? WTF? seriously WTF? Oh, and not flushing toilets at Football games. Dudes, this is just so wrong in many ways.
I am not sure which insults me more: Violating the separation of Church and State? or the Stupidity that continues to fuel this drought by not working harder in the past and present to save water….
Walking in 02138 November 13, 2007
Posted by spacemom in : Current Affairs , 5 commentsJay took a break from his proposal writing and I took a break from code writing to go to our local Starbucks before the sun set (Yes, the sun is setting NOW as in 4:08 in the fricken afternoon! It is fully down by 4:30! G-d I hate living this far east this time of the year.) We were walking on the sidewalk, java in hand, when Jay abruptly pushed me aside. A biker came barreling down the sidewalk, 2 feet away from THE BIKE LANE PAINTED ON THE ROAD, on his cellphone and weaving.
I looked at Jay and said "Damn, I thought that was what the BIKE LANE was for"
Jay just yelled out "Blue tooth Dude! It’s called Blue tooth!"
I shook my head, "Harvard’s admission standards have gone down, haven’t they?"

Posted by spacemom in : Current Affairs , 3 commentsYesterday was tough. Soleil was insane. She was acting like a cat. You know, the kind where you can talk directly to her and she looks at you and then says "No, I didn’t hear a word you said". She was off in her own little land. It drove me batty. It was beyond batty.
As for Acupuncture. Can I say it is amazing? Yoko did an amazing job on the tension on my shoulders. It is as if she made it all disappear. I love it. Sometimes, the needles go into a follicle and man, does that hurt, but I can relax and let the tension go… It is wonderful!
I actually have things of substance to blog, BUT I have a code to write and a blue sky to watch while I take a walk…. Maybe more later.

A quick post before the day hits. November 9, 2007
Posted by spacemom in : Weblogs, Religion , 2 commentsYes, I was hoping to get a quick post in before the day really hit me hard. But, oy! Start with the bus being EARLY and you get the picture of today. I make the girls leave the house at 8:25 (so we really leave around 8:28). We need to walk about 1/6 mile to the bus stop. It’s not far, but it is around the corner. We got to the bus stop at 8:33 and BOOM at 8:35 the bus was there. The boy at the corner house almost missed it. His mom ran him across the street and got him on the bus. Whew!
We had two meltdowns in the car; one because Soleil got the pretty pony tail holder and one because we’re three and who needs a reason to meltdown when you’re three? G-d, I hate three. There are so many great parts of this age, just to be blown out of the water by Toddler Insanity. Really, I think it’s been declared by the APA that children who are three are affected by Toddler Insanity. If I were Dave Barry, I would say that Toddler Insanity is a great name for a band.
Finally, we made it to daycare, when another meltdown occurred because Daddy was going to make it to the door first.(Note to self. Find copy of Alfie Kohn’s No Contest. Use this as a bedtime story.)
I’ve been avoiding the "post once a day in November" stuff because, well, I post every work day and occasionally on weekends. It is fun reading everyone else’s blogs, but really, I can’t keep up. I have a life somewhere in here.
But yesterday, one of my favorite bloggers*** who shall remain nameless, titled a post "Arbeit macht frei".
I couldn’t remember the translation, but the title was enough to unnerve me. In truth, the blogger was not trying to offend. She was upset over a topic. She later changed the title to the English and later changed it again.
It is amazing how little words can hurt. To me, this phrase brings hurt to my children. They don’t even know it. This weekend, our town is holding a memorial for Kristallnacht. Please take a moment to read that link. I’ll wait.
You back? Good. Think about this. I think about our temple. The beauty of the sanctuary. The handcarved ark that holds three Torot (Torah scrolls). I am not terribly religious, but I shudder at these thoughts… Imagine, people bursting in and destroying this all. Imagine being forced to a camp or beating to death just for being Jewish. My children would be accepted as Jews by the haters and probably not as Jews by the faithful (blood line goes through the mother). Could something like this happen today?
You think it can’t. You know it can’t, right? I mean it’s not like the United States would ever round up people based on their religion and torture them and force them to live in a camp? We’re tolerant now. Right? We respect all religions (unless you are atheist. Then you are scum of the earth(that’s SARCASM– I support atheists 100%))
Imagine this, one small title on a blog post. Having nothing to do with religion at all, brought on these strong feelings… Words hurt. Use them carefully.
***If you know this blogger, understand that I am NOT upset at her in any way. She is a wonderful person. I am not mad at her. She changed the title when people questioned her on it. And NO, I will not respond to questions of who it was. She does not deserve any bad press. This is a post about how words brought on such strong feelings….

Posted by spacemom in : Life...otherwise , add a commentWe woke up this morning to a beautiful frost. The grass was white and crystalline, the air crisp. The low angled sunlight was just brushing the tops of the blades of frozen grass, cause sublimation to occur. The mist slowly rose from the lawn. Then Jay ruined the whole mood.
Nance? How far did you rake the leaves on Monday? Did you do the backyard?
Um, no… I only did the side and the front.
Really? It must be an optical illusion of the frost, but it looks like the leaves are gone!
He was right! The leaves WERE gone. Hmmm. Then Soleil noticed all of the leaves were off our deck too! Then I noticed that it looked like our lawn had been cut!
At first, I was blaming Mrs. Figby for sending her fall clean-up karma our way. I mean, who willingly cleans up someone else’s leaves? But I had to call our landscapers. They cut our yard because we have run out of time to do it. They will do a fall clean-up also, for $400! Yes FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS! I’m sorry, I am cheap, unless I am sick, I can get those leaves myself, thankyouverymuchthankyouverymuch! The landscapers let us know that they decided since fall is running a bit behind, they would give all of the lawns one last cut. And that cut sucked up all of our leaves…. Ah… At least most of that chore is done now, right?
Leopard is making me see spots November 7, 2007
Posted by spacemom in : She Blinded me with Science , 3 commentsI am fighting with leopard! Oy!
Now, if you are a regular mac user, please don’t be afraid. Leopard is amazing! I love it, EXCEPT I am having trouble with my Xauthentications. What? What the hell is she talking about? If you don’t know, then don’t worry, But if you are a mac/unix/linux geek, I am going to slam my head into a wall. Somehow, I have lost the DISPLAY environment variable…so no windows will show.
Sigh….
Oh well! I will figure it out. Instead, I will listen to Jimmy Buffett and the steel drums transport me far away from the cold of Boston. I will figure out what is going on with X.. I will.
ETA: A few Fruitcakes with Buffett and I am doing much better. Now to print out more things to review! I will survive today!
