Assvice time! February 14, 2008

Posted by spacemom in : Current Affairs , trackback

I am getting ready to schedule my eye doctor appointment. I am planning to ask about LASIK.

So, dear Internets, Help me out here. Any assvice? Should I do this? What is the recovery time? Should I just stick with contacts and glasses for the rest of my life?

What are the risks? Is the surgery itself long or painful or just plain freaky?

ASSVICE PLEASE!

‘k, it’s time for my LASIK post. Short answer: It’s Da Bomb, really. Nine years ago–recovery time was “pain-ish” for one day, dry crumbly eyes for a week or two, and that’s it. Surgery is quick and fascinating. It is too cool for words, really.

However, there *are* risks. But it was like 1% risk of complications back nine years ago. Make sure you go to a reputatble place that does lots of them, preferably a place where the dudes/dudettes who run it had it done to themselves as well.

My DH had this done about 4 years ago & has been bugging me ever since to have it done as well. Not sure what’s holding me back, as he’s 110% thrilled with the results. Let me know what you decide!

No assvice here, it’s a tough decision, and personally I’d be too chicken to do it. I do know two success stories, if that helps at all. My good friend T had it done and was amazed and thrilled that she could finally see her husband through the little window in the door as soon as she sat up (and recovery for her was not bad at all). My sister-in-law had to get it done twice — I guess her vision at night was still horrible after the first time. But now she loves it, especialy since she’s really athletic and the constant glasses/contacts was really a pain. I think it was kind of scary going back for that second surgery, though, not knowing if it would help.

My DH did it 4 years ago after alot of research. Do each eye separately rather than both at once. AND take the painkillers right away - when he didn’t he was in pain. But he was ecstatic —first eye he walked out saying I can see…I can see! (He had heavy thick glasses since 8 and was nearing 40!)

Why separately..well you want to make sure it has taken and no probs. I have a former roomate who went the quick and cheap route and blinks, blinks, blinks….it annoys her, it annoys you to watch.

I’m too chicken to try it myself, although I would be a perfect candidate. I have two close friends that have had it done, and both rave about it. I have heard the following day is a bit uncomfortable, but that is the worst of it. Good luck :)

Definitely do it! I had the procedure done 8 years ago and it is nothing short of a miracle. To be glasses and contact free is amazing.

I got it done 5 years ago and LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT! I am a biologist and work out in all kinds of weather conditions and not having the pain of contacts or the fogging up of glasses has made my fieldwork and life in general much more enjoyable. I can now see the alarm clock, swim and play in the water without worry and in general be more spontaneous. I could see immediately after the procedure- was very sensitive to light right after, but went home took the pain pill, fell asleep for 4 hours, then took my dogs for a walk in the woods. The past year I have developed some dry eye issues, which I attribute more to allergies and working in an office with mold in the walls and ceiling. The procedure was a little freaky, but I had a great doctor who made me laugh through the whole thing. I highly recommend. My vision has been 20/20 since the procedure.

I had it done in 2006, and it is the best thing EVER. I got my first pair of glasses in first grade, and I was very, very, very nearsighted to the point I couldn’t see the alarm clock from bed. It has literally changed my life.
My vision is now 20/15 and my dr. says I have one of the best corrections he has ever seen. I did not have any astigmatism or other issues that affect what type of laser they use.
The procedure itself made me very anxious, but it was over in just a few minutes. My eyes felt gritty and things were a little blurry for the next day or two, but it got better and better hour by hour.
DO IT! :) Just find a very reputable doctor who has done thousands of procedures.
